Integrated Catalysis (iCAT) CDT

How to apply

Applications for cohort 4 are now closed. This website, and all other iCAT online channels, will be updated as soon as applications for cohort 5 (2023 start) are open; this is likely to happen around October 2022. The application process will not change; you can read about it below.

Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area of science or engineering. Please note that:

  • Applications open in October for the following September.

Please ensure that you read and follow the application instructions below.

Application instructions

To apply to the iCAT CDT, please follow the instructions below.

All applications must be made online via the University's website. The online form is generic and is used for all postgraduate degrees, but the instructions below are designed to make the application to the CDT as simple as possible. You'll find the link to the application form on the University website.

  1. Follow the instructions to register.
  2. Level of Study: Postgraduate Research
  3. Entry year: 2023/24
  4. Academic Programme: type 'catalysis' on the search box, and select 'PhD Integrated Catalysis CDT - Full Time' (last option on the list).
  5. The four steps above will lead you to the Application Summary. In order to start your application, you'll need to use the menu on the left side of the screen.
  6. Steps 1-5 are straightforward. On step 6 (Research Details) select No when asked if you are applying for a specific project AND if you have identified any potential supervisors. Under 'proposed area of research or project title' please type Integrated catalysis.
  7. Complete steps 7-8 as appropriate. On step 9, answer Yes to the first question (have you secured funding?). Select Other from the type of funding menu, and Awarded on the status of funding one; leave all other (optional) questions blank.
  8. Finally, complete steps 10-12. Please note that:
    • (step 10) Referees, at least 1 of which must be academic, will receive an automated email with a link to complete the online reference form. We expect applicants to inform them that your application has been submitted, as we will not process the application until we receive at least one academic reference.
    • (step 12) We do need you to attach your CV and, in lieu of a research statement/proposal, we ask that you provide us with a personal statement no longer than 500 words.

Funding and eligibility

All iCAT CDT students, regardless of their nationality, will be fully funded: fees are covered, and an annual stipend at UKRI level will be provided. Students will additionally receive a travel and consumables budget. The only caveat is that we can only recruit a limited number of non-UK applicants.
